Actor Awareness
Actor Awareness is a campaign fighting for more equality, diversity and working class talent in the arts and aims to provide a community and voice for these disenfranchised groups.
Our passion is to inspire talent from all backgrounds. Also to create a community of people to share and create work in a safe environment. As part of this mission we also create artistic opportunities and other support for actors, writers and directors who may have faced barriers in the industry. We have been established for 8 years. Reports of our work have been in The Guardian, The Stage, ITV News, BBC Radio, Sky News and more. We have been running events and festivals in London and forming great partnerships with the likes of Spotlight, Backstage, Star Now and more. Now Actor Awareness comes back home to the north to help under represented creatives.
TOM STOCKS the founder of Actor Awareness is is an actor, producer, poet and award winning writer from Bolton. He is the writer of award nominated show Netflix and Chill. Also his new show On The Streets Of Covid has just won an award by The Royal Exchange Theatre. Recently Tom has become a poet, having his work featuring on BBC Radio, BBC I Player and BT Sport. In his acting he has featured in things such as Blinded By The Light and The Greater Game.

CALLING ALL WRITERS!
After the SOLD OUT success with our “Class Night” at the Old Courts in February, we are back and wanting more!
Actor Awareness is all about helping working class writers, directors and actors, Tom Stocks brings the critically acclaimed company Actor Awareness, back to it’s home in the North. With various new writing nights performed at Spotlight Studios in the heart of the West End, Actor Awareness set’s up these new writing opportunities in Wigan.
Our nights always have a set theme that is aimed at under-represented voices. To enter the rules are as follows. The story can be about anything as long as the piece is written and directed by playwrights who identify as a woman. This theme always goes down well and is one of our big hitters.
Applicants can be any age, ethnicity, sexuality, background, etc, it is open for all. The piece must be between 10-15 minutes. Maximum 3 performers per show, plus the writer/ director, so 4 members in total for each group. We are looking for 5 pieces of live new writing. It can be short plays, poetry, monologues, short extracts of longer pieces. Casting and organizing rehearsals must be done by the chosen participants, however we can help with casting calls, advice and some support when necessary, etc.
It will be part of the Actor Awareness partnership with The Old Courts, taking part in their lovely “Holding Cell” space in the heart of Wigan.
We always have an industry panel giving written feedback if wanted. Previously we have had the incredible Julie Hesmondhalgh, The Octagons amazing producer Catt Belcher, award winning writers such as Anna Jordan & Jon Brittain, casting directors such as Heather Basten, Suzanne Smith & Daniel Edwards, plus many many more.
The date of the show will be Wednesday 20th April 2022.
Send all submissions to actorawareness1@gmail.com for your entry. Please only attach your script, your name and a short synopsis of the piece, nothing else, no CV, we like blind casting.
